Related disabilities and health conditions

People with epilepsy may be more likely to live with other physical, cognitive and mental health conditions compared with the general population. For example:

  • 1 in 4 people with a cognitive disability also live with epilepsy
  • 1 in 4 people with cerebral palsy are also likely to live with epilepsy
  • 1 in 5 people with autism spectrum disorder also live with epilepsy
  • People with epilepsy are more likely to have mood disorders including dysthymic disorder, anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder
  • Seizures can occur in conjunction with a number of other disabilities and health conditions
  • There are also several epilepsy-related syndromes that cause other disabilities.
