Like many neurological conditions, epilepsy can change over time. It is essential that people living with epilepsy can see a neurologist in a timely manner and have rapid access to specialist care when their condition changes.
New Zealand currently trains five neurologists each year, but due to funding constraints, only three are able to join the public health workforce. Train Five, Keep Five is an advocacy campaign led by the Neurological Alliance, of which Epilepsy New Zealand is a proud member, calling on the Government to fund two additional public hospital neurology positions every year and commit to developing a national neurological workforce strategy to ensure New Zealand can meet future demand.
Listen to Neurological Alliance Chair Rich East and Neurological Association Chair Dr James Cleland speaking with RNZ’s Nine to Noon about why this campaign matters.
